Seven Issues Africa is Watching Out for at Lima COP20

LIMA, Peru 2 December, 2014 (ClimDev-Africa) - Thirteen months to the deadline for signing a new global pact on curbing greenhouse gas emissions, the meeting of nearly 200 governments in Lima, Peru for a major UN climate change summit must produce the first draft of a global deal to cut emissions, and steer the course for a binding global commitment on carbon emissions in Paris 2015. Lima 2014 must pave the way to a historic pact in Paris 2015 that will, for the first time, apply to 195 nations, both rich and poor.

African Group denounces push back on achievements of Durban, Doha by developed countries

AfDB to Support Africa's Agenda for the New 2015 Climate Agreement During the Global Climate Talks At Cop 20

The African Development Bank (AfDB) will participate in the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, known as COP 20, taking place from December 1-12 in Lima, Peru. This year, AfDB's efforts in addressing climate-resilient and low-carbon development in Africa, and particularly the initiatives contributing to improving access to climate finance, will be emphasized.

Africa hopes Lima meeting will re-energize climate change talks

At the upcoming UN climate change meeting in Lima (COP 20), African groups are hoping that progress can be made towards the goal of reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
COP 20 - the acronym for the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change - begins in Lima, Peru, on December 1, 2014. It is seen by environmental experts as a crucial springboard to COP 21 in Paris a year later, where it is hoped a binding and universal agreement on limiting the effects of climate change can be reached.
 

ClimDev-Africa, a Development Program, according to Guinea Bissau’s Minister of Environment.

Mr Barros Bacar Banjai, Guinea Bissau’s Secretary of State for Environment is one of the African Environment Ministers who contributed to the proceedings of the Fourth Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-IV), which was held from 8 -10 October in Marrakech, Morocco. At the end of the Conference, which brought to the fore the plight of Island States in the context of climate change, Mr Barros shared his views on the Conference, the situation of Island States and the ClimDev-Africa programme, which he considers to be a development program.

ACPC and Benin at work to achieve a green Africa!

Benin's Minister of Environment, in charge of Climate Change Management, Reforestation and Protection of Natural Resources and Forestry, Mr. Raphael EDOU, following his active contribution to the discussions of the Fourth Conference on Climate Change and development of Africa (CCDA-IV), provided his assessment of the partnership between his country and the ACPC to the ClimDev-Africa Reporting Team. On this occasion, he presented the "10 million-souls 10 million-trees" project initiated by the President of Benin and supported by the ACPC in a bid to reforest Benin and promote a green Africa.

Abdoulaye Baldé, Senegal’s Minister of Environment was one of the most active ministers who took part in the successful deliberation of CCDA-IV, which was held from 8 - 10 October in Marrakech Morocco. At the end of the meeting, Mr Baldé shared with the ClimDev-Africa Reporting Team his views on the Conference, his thoughts about food self-sufficiency in Senegal and for ClimDev-Africa, the Pan-African initiative, which organized Africa's largest event on climate change.

In many ways, 2014 is the ‘high stakes’ year that will define whether we sink or swim amidst rising temperatures, cataclysmic unseasonable weather events, and existential threats to humanity.
