Side Event Outcome

Key Messages

  1. Climate change poses challenges to the development of African SIDS, thus programmes to reduce vulnerability are critical.
  2. The oceans play important roles in the development of fragile economies of African SIDS. Development pathways that align African SIDS towards blue and green economies must be encouraged to turn challenges into opportunities.
  3. Infrastructure development is essential for transforming African SIDS following frequent damages by climate hazards such as hurricanes, typhoons etc.
  4. The challenges facing African SIDS are enormous for any single Small Island Development State to deal with. Partnerships and adopting regional approaches in trade, ocean security and investments are critical in achieving profitable thresholds, and offsetting the high transaction cost required for development.

SIDS-centred partnerships and follow-ups

Following requests from African SIDS, the African Climate Policy Center (ACPC) in UNECA, under the auspices of Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) programme, conducted consultative fact-finding missions in the six African SIDS. Partnership agreements will be established between ClimDev-Africa and the SIDS to provide support for climate change response.

Voluntary commitments

The ClimDev-Africa Programme has mobilized resources and set up platforms for providing climate information services, technical and advisory support to African SIDS with their transformational agenda.
